Edward S. Byrne

Edward S. Byrne, 88, died peacefully at Lowell General Hospital, Thursday afternoon, July 22, 2010, surrounded by his loving family.

A recent resident of Chelmsford, Ed was born in Lowell, MA on January 7, 1922. He was married to the late Dorothy C. (Gentile) (Callery) Byrne and son of the late Owen Byrne and the late Mary (Burke) Byrne. He graduated from Lowell High School and served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II.

Ed was employed by the Edith Nourse Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital for many years, retiring in 1987. Prior to that he was employed by the former McCartney's Clothing Store.

Ed was an accomplished card player who enjoyed many years playing cards in the 45 League at the Whipple Caf� and the Monday night Cribbage League at the East End Club. Ed was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan.

He loved spending time with his loving family and especially enjoyed all his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Ed is survived by his two sons, James T. Callery and his wife Agnes of Dracut, Michael Byrne and his wife Ruth of Chelmsford and his daughter-in-law Nancyjean Callery of Dracut, and a sister Florence LaDuke of Lawrence. Eight grandchildren Deborah Callery of Lowell, Michael Callery of Lowell, Laurie McAnespie of Lowell, Patrick Callery of Dracut, Jonna Clermont of Pepperell, E. Christopher Callery of Hudson, NH, Matthew Byrne of Lowell, Shaina Byrne of Cambridge; nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his siblings Lillian Jackson, Marion Cutter, Louise Salian, John Byrne, Helen Bergeron, Walter Byrne and Joan Buckley.

He was also predeceased by his son Edward R. Callery of Dracut who died suddenly a few days before him on July 19, 2010.

A special thanks to the staff of the Lowell General Hospital Intermediate Cardiac Care Unit and to the staff of J.J. Boomer's Restaurant in Lowell who showed Ed such kindness and made him feel so special every Friday at lunch.
