Edward R. "Bucky" Boehm

April 28, 1923 — February 15, 2016

Edward R. "Bucky" Boehm, beloved husband of the late Mary R. (Reed) Boehm, and a resident of the Highlands section of Lowell, died unexpectedly Monday, February 15, 2016, at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center, with his family by his side. He was a 62 year communicant of St. Margaret Church in Lowell.

Born in Methuen on April 28, 1923, Bucky was a son of the late Charles and Mary (Siegel) Boehm. A 1941 graduate of Methuen High School, he lettered in football, baseball, and basketball and was the first inductee into the Methuen High School Hall of Fame in 1981.

Upon graduating from high school, Bucky traveled to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii where he served as a civilian worker helping with the war effort. In 1946 while playing baseball in Hawaii, Bucky was discovered and drafted by the Philadelphia Athletics. As a signing bonus, he was given a new set of golf clubs, which probably sparked his love of golf. He retired from baseball in 1953 and was then employed as a supervisor with the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company for 33 years, retiring in 1986 . Bucky and his wife, Mary enjoyed traveling, spending summers in Ossipee, NH and winters in Clearwater Beach, FL.

Bucky's life revolved around his love of family and sports. He coached Highland Park Little League baseball and basketball in Lowell, and also served as a basketball referee for several years. He was an avid golfer to say the least. He started and ran the Massachusetts Telephone Workers Golf League for 50 years and was a recent member of Pine Valley Golf Course, where at age 90, he scored a hole in one. He thoroughly enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participate in their high school and college endeavors.

Surviving him are his two children and their spouses, Robert "Bob" and Dawn (Pearsall) Boehm, Sandra and Michael Sullivan, all of Lowell; three grandchildren, Alyson Boehm, Patrick and Declan Sullivan; a sister Arlene Byrd of Vienna, VA; and several nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He was the grandfather of the late Daniel Boehm Sullivan, and brother of the late Walter Boehm, Gladys Reed-Hesson, Marion Thissell, and Charles Boehm.
