Doris A. (Grady) Spinney, 94, a lifelong resident of the Highlands section of Lowell, died Friday, May 15, 2015 at a local health care facility with her loving family by her side.
She was the beloved wife of the late George W. Spinney, Sr. with whom she was married for 54 years.
Born in Lowell on January 25, 1921, she was a daughter of the late Michael and Mary (Murphy) Grady.
Mrs. Spinney was educated in Lowell Schools and was a communicant of St. Margaret Church. She was the past Prefect of the St. Margaret Ladies Sodality and past Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughter's of America. She also volunteered her time as a Girl Scout Leader for many years.
She served with the United States Navy – WAVES during World War II from 1943 until her honorable discharge in 1946.
Prior to her retirement, she was employed by the Lowell Technological Institute (UMASS –LOWELL) in the accounts receivable department.
She is survived by two sons, George W. Spinney, Jr. and his wife Diane (Morrissette) of Valley Cottage, NY and Robert C. Spinney and his wife Maureen (Gillette) of Lowell; her daughter, Barbara S. Brown and her husband retired L.T.C. Walter A. Brown, US Army, of Nashua, NH; a sister-in-law, Pat McNiff of Lowell; five grandchildren, Kristine B. Ostrowski and her husband John of Nashua, NH, Laura D. Spinney of Valley Cottage, NY, Joseph W. Spinney and his wife Elizabeth of Clinton Corners, NY, Joshua Cormier and his companion Leslie Reed of NY, NY and James Cormier and his wife C.J. of Swampscott; six great grandchildren, Emily Ann, Zachary John and Ryan Michael Ostrowski, Grace Elizabeth and Olivia James Spinney and Jackson Cormier; also several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Joseph "Little Joe" Spinney, grandmother of the late Michael J. Spinney, sister of the late Marguerite A. Barrett and her husband the late William F. Barrett, and sister-in-law of the late Helen Elliot, Evelyn McCartney and Louise Spinney.
Most important to Doris and what she cherished most was time spent with her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and the rest of her extended family.
