Donald R. Jean, a longtime Dracut resident passed away on Monday, June 17, 2024 at the Lowell General Hospital following a period of declining health. He was 89.
Born in Chelmsford on August 25, 1934, he was a son of the late Albert and Germaine (Lamothe) Jean
Don started working in construction at the age of 13 with his father. At age 18 he left to join the US Air Force during the Korean War. He flew with Division 55 in the 343rd SRS (Special Reconnaissance Squadron) and was the crew chief on the RB - 47 plane. Don attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and received the Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. He went on the Honor Flight in 2019.
When he returned from the war he continued to work with his father at Gil Campbell Construction where they did framing and finish carpentry of new homes. He also worked for many years with Pete Jean Construction, Norman Breault Construction and also was self employed building custom homes in Dracut. During his retirement Don worked in the Richardson Junior High as a cafeteria monitor.
He was a member of the Franco American Veterans Association and a communicant of Ste. Marguerite D'Youville Church where he was a member of their prayer group.
Don's family would like to thank the staff at Lowell General Hospital for their kindness, compassion and care given to him.
Survivors include a son, David Jean of Dracut; a granddaughter Ruby Jean and her mother Kate Shiel; sisters and brothers, Roger Jean, Richard and Donna Jean, all of Dracut, Pauline Chaput all of Lowell, Diane Marcoux of Dracut; sisters in law, Pauline Jean, of Lowell, Ruth Ann Zemetres of Old Orchard Beach, ME; brother in law, Ronnie Zemetres of Florida; dear friend Patty Culnaine of Lowell; and several nieces and nephews. Donald was the former husband of the late Julia D. (Cunha) Jean with whom he was married for 40 years, the brother of the late Maurice Jean, Paul Jean, and brother in law of the late Aline Boucher, Barbara Jean, Rita Jean, Hubert Chaput and Michael Marcoux.
Relatives and friends are invited to Don's Funeral Mass to be celebrated on Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 10:00 AM in Ste. Marguerite Church, 1340 Lakeview Ave. Dracut. Burial will be private. Donations in his memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Association P.O. Box 96011, Washington, DC 20090-6011.
