Dominique L. "Mickey" Hamel, the beloved husband of the late Gertrude D. (Beaulieu) Hamel, died at his Dracut residence on Thursday June 18, 2015 surrounded by his family.
He was born in Lowell on February 2, 1922, a son of the late Joseph and Graziella (Guilmette) Hamel.
Mickey was a member of the Greatest Generation, serving in the Army and attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. During WWII Mickey was involved in several battles and campaigns, including Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe, to which he was awarded the Bronze Star.
Following the war Mickey and Gert settled in Dracut. He was employed as a carpenter for many years at Raytheon. They were communicants of St. Francis Parish in Dracut, and members of the Dracut Senior Citizen Club.
Mickey enjoyed fishing, dancing, watching the Red Sox, the outdoors, and sunshine, which was why he vacationed in Florida every year. He always stayed connected to family and friends no matter where they were.
Family was paramount to Mickey, especially his grandchildren. He would dress up as Santa at Christmas, and could always be seen playing cowboys and indians.
Knowing the importance of the American flag, he made sure it was flown in front of his house every day.
A mild mannered and compassionate person, who had a kind word for all. He was always eager to lend a hand to repair or build something for family or friends.
