Brendan C. Sullivan

Lowell - Brendan C. Sullivan, 69, husband of Eileen M. (Murray) Sullivan, a resident of the Belvidere section of Lowell, died Thursday October 4, at the Saints Medical Center following a brief illness.
He was born on March 4, 1938, a son of the late Raymond A. and Marguerite (Shugrue) Sullivan.
Brendan was a 1956 graduate of Lowell High School and a 1960 graduate of Providence College, where he later received his master's degree in English. He also pursued advanced graduate studies in literature at University College, Dublin, Ireland.
He was an English teacher at Lowell High School for 40 years, retiring in 2000. He was also employed in the maintenance department at the National Park Service for 20 years, retiring in 2006.
Brendan was a communicant and longtime lector at the Immaculate Conception Church, a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and a member and former vice president of the United Teachers of Lowell.
Brendan's love of literature was matched by his devotion to his students. For four decades hundreds of Lowell High students profited from his enthusiasm for his subject and from his commitment to their intellectual growth.
Brendan also found an outlet for his cheerful erudition in a famous penchant for story telling. He was a raconteur of note and an unrivalled historian of his family and his neighborhood.
Surviving him besides his wife are three sons and a daughter-in-law: Liam S. and Kerry Sullivan, Michael P. Sullivan and Eamonn Sullivan, all of Lowell; a daughter and her fianc�, Mary R. Sullivan and Timothy Perullo of Lowell; four brothers and three sisters-in-law, Raymond and Jeannie Sullivan of Brewster, Brian Sullivan of Lowell, Quentin and Anita Sullivan of Haverhill and Neil and Kate Sullivan of New Jersey; a sister, Ellen Strain of Paris, France; three grandchildren, Shelby, Aislinn, and Ciara; and many nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Patricia Sullivan and brother-in-law of the late Gustave Strain.
