It is with great sorrow and bittersweet gratitude that The Gagnon, The Ayers, and The Coupal families announce the passing of our beautiful, kind, brave and unimaginably generous wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Bernadette (Bernie) J Garceau Coupal on April 28th,2024.
Bernie was born on April 1, 1936, in Champlain, NY and was the loving daughter to the late Harvey and Victoria (Houle) Garceau. Bernie was predeceased by her husband Andre (Tom), who passed on November 8, 1982.
Bernie was a beloved CNA for 25 yrs loving and caring for her patients at Glenwood Care and Rehabilitation Center, in Lowell, MA and D’Youville Life & Wellness Community, in Lowell, MA.
A nurturing woman by nature, she was a motherly friend to everyone she met. Bernie loved baking, bingo and her trips to Twin Rivers and Foxwoods. She was the most AMAZING cook. Her family and friends loved every meal and dessert she made. She enjoyed watching her “programs”, especially The Price is Right, Highway to Heaven, Matlock and Lifetime Crime Movies. Bernie will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Bernie is survived by her caretakers and devoted daughters: Mary Gagnon and her husband Louis and Andrea Ayers and her husband Bryon. Bernie is also survived by her daughter Victoria Coupal, her son Philip Coupal and his wife Linda, her son Alan Coupal and his wife Ginger and her son Charles Burkhart and his husband Olin. Bernie also leaves behind her sister-in-law and best friend Annette Coupal and her niece Sandra Baker. Memere Darling as her grandchildren affectionately called her is survived by her 15 grandchildren and many great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. Bernie will be forever grateful to her grandchildren Amy Gagnon, Timothy Gagnon, Andre Coupal, Laura Alexander, Joelynn Folger, Amber Ayers and Monica Perron for everything they did for her. All the grandchildren will miss her dearly.
In addition to her husband and parents, Bernie is also predeceased by her beloved daughter Nancy Coupal who passed away at age 4 on August 28, 1965. Her siblings, Anita McKenna, Theodore Garceau and Charlotte “Shirley” Costanzo. In addition to her family members Bernie is predeceased by her beloved dog, Bailey.
Bernadette’s family would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all the staff, who are now family at Lowell General Hospital’s Main Campus PCU Floor, as well as all the nurses and aides at Northwood Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, Fresenius Kidney Care Rogers St. Lowell, MA. The family appreciates the staff for loving and taking care of our mom. A very special thanks to Dr. Sebastian Sepulveda for all the love and care given to our mom. We will always be grateful for you!
Relatives and friends are invited to Bernadette's Funeral Mass on Thursday at 10:00 AM in St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 115 Wheeler Road, Dracut. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bernie's memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude PL, Memphis, TN 38105-9959
