Arthur J. Hickey

Arthur J. Hickey, 83, a longtime Lowell resident died peacefully on Wednesday March 21, 2012 following a period of declining health. He was the husband of the late Eleanor M. (Cawley) Hickey who died in 2005.
Born in Lawrence on October 13, 1928, he was a son of the late Andrew F. and Julia T. (Casey) Hickey.
Arthur was educated in Lawrence at St. Mary of the Assumption School and Central Catholic High School. He went on to graduate from Merrimack College. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the National Association of Atomic Veterans.
His professional career included many entrepreneurial ventures including ownership of a social lounge, an organic grocery as well as real estate and insurance sales. He began his ultimate profession as a teacher at the Varnum School in Lowell and continued teaching at Lowell High School as a Sociology and History teacher until his retirement. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians-Lawrence and The Knights of Columbus and was actively involved with local politics serving on many Democratic committees.
Sports, especially baseball, encompassed a large part of his life. Arthur participated on baseball teams at many levels in the City of Lawrence and at Central Catholic before signing with and playing in the Chicago White Sox system. He applied his love of sports by coaching youth baseball teams in the Centralville section of Lowell, winning multiple titles and City Championships. He also served as the Athletic Director for a local high school, coached high school softball and organized youth baseball clinics. In his later years he became a fan of his grandchildren's endeavors and the pride he took in them sustained him. Arthur will always be remembered for his ability to captivate an audience with his story telling and for his incredible Irish wit.
Mr. Hickey is survived by three sons, Andrew J. Hickey and his wife, Mary of Dracut, Edward C. Hickey of Lowell, Terence P. Hickey and his wife, Elizabeth of Tampa, Florida; two daughters, Louise M. Howard and her husband, Charles of Carver, Kathleen A. Scott and her husband, Kevin of Lowell; his beloved grandchildren, Julia and Kathryn Hickey, Delaney Hickey, Shannon, Christopher and Daniel Howard, Jack, Kevin, Timothy, Sean and Seamus Scott; many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Andrew and John Hickey.
