Arthur J Bonin, 84, beloved husband of Pauline (Denault) Bonin, a longtime resident of Centralville, died Tuesday, August 16, 2005, at Saints Memorial Hospital.
Born in Lowell on August 20, 1920, he was a son of the late Anthyme and Claudia (Gendreau)Bonin. He was a communicant of the former St Louis de France Church and was a member of the Parish Holy Name Society. Educated in Lowell schools, he also attended Lowell Tech. Prior to his retirement he was employed in Fire Control at Fort Devens from 1955 to 1982. During his employment he received cash awards for recommendations that he made.
A Navy veteran of WWII, he was a plank owner on the destroyer Stembel DD644. A second class petty officer, he served in the Middle Eastern, European and African Campaign and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre where he received seven Bronze Stars. He also served in the Phillipine
Liberation where he also received two Bronze Stars. He earned the Good Conduct Medal and the WWII Victory Medal. Among other Medals and Ribbons he earned are the American Campaign Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon and the VFW Honor Guard Ribbon.
Mr. Bonin held lifetime memberships in the VFW Post 662 where he served with the Honor Guard for several year and the Franco-American Veterans Post 4. He was a member of the Veterans of St Louis, the Tin Can Sailors Association, the USS Kydd Association, the Navy Memorial in Washington, DC, the Kamikaze Survivors Association, the American Legion of Lowell, Post 87, the Centralville Senior Citizens' Club and the AARP. He was an avid bowler with the Couples League.
Surviving him beside his wife are two sons and a daughter-in-law, David A Bonin and Kenneth W and Marlene Bonin, all of Lowell; a brother, Lionel H Bonin of Lowell; a granddaughter, Cara C Bonin and grandson, Kenneth W Bonin, Jr. He was the father of the late Richard J Bonin who died in 1968.
