Rev. Albert P. Martineau, OMI, 82, died on October 29, 2013, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Residence in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, after a sudden illness. He was born in Manchester, New Hampshire, on May 30, 1931, a son of the late Arthur and Cecile (Coté) Martineau. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by four brothers, Gerard Martineau, Rev. Donald Martineau, André Martineau, and Rev. Maurice Martineau, and three sisters, Sr. Therese Martineau, PM, Dolores Martineau, and Lillian Martineau. He was also predeceased by a grand-nephew, Patrick Dunn.
He was educated in Manchester, New Hampshire, through high school. He attended Oblate College in Bar Harbor, Maine, followed by studies in philosophy and theology at the Oblate Scholasticate in Natick, Massachusetts.
Fr. Martineau entered the novitiate of the Missionary Oblates on August 1, 1952, in Colebrook, New Hampshire. He professed his first vows there on August 2, 1953, and professed perpetual vows on September 8, 1956, in Natick, Massachusetts. On June 24, 1959, he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Louis Collignon, OMI, at St. Jean-Baptiste Church in Lowell, Massachusetts.
Following ordination, Fr. Martineau was assigned to St. Jean-Baptiste Province of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, later known as the Northern U.S. Province and currently the Northeast Area of the U.S. Province. He served in various ministries including parish work at St. Peter's Parish in Plattsburgh, New York, from 1959-1960 and at St. Jean-Baptiste Parish from 1990-1993. He was the Treasurer at Ephpheta House in Manville, Rhode Island, and at the Oblate Center in Natick, Massachusetts. He assisted both places during their closing procedures. He was Director of the Oblate Foreign Missions in 1985.
Fr. Martineau ministered at St. Joseph the Worker Shrine, Lowell, Massachusetts, on several occasions, most recently from 1993 to 2008. He retired to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Residence in July of 2008, where he remained until his death.
In addition to his Oblate family, Fr. Martineau is survived by one sister, Sr. Claudette Martineau, MSOLA, of Holyoke, Massachusetts; a sister-in-law, Vivian Martineau, of Manchester, New Hampshire; a niece, Dora Dunn, of Pittsfield, Massachusetts; a grand-nephew, W. Shawn Dunn, and two great-grandnieces, all of South Carolina; a cousin, Rev. Roland Coté, of Manchester, New Hampshire; a cousin, Rachel Brochu, and her husband, Donald, of Billerica, Massachusetts; other cousins including Pauline Beaulieu, Denise Carigan, Donald Coté, Jennine Coté, Doris Demers, Sr. Yvonne Gilibert, Doris Kelly, and Sr. Reine Marie, PM, all of Manchester, New Hampshire; Diane Coté and Diane Lavoie, both of North Carolina; Kathleen Martineau, of Sufferin, New York; Irene Coté, Jean Coté, Leo Coté, and Louis Coté; and numerous other first, second, and third generation cousins.
